It's a little late in the month, but we have finally gotten to our Incentive project for my most fabulous classes in March. The project was put on hold until after the art show, and now it has arrived. In celebration of Earth Day, classes that earned 4 or more ART PAWs were able to create a planet portrait. Students were provided with chalk pastels and paint to create planets, stars, nebulas, and moons. Students had one hour to experiment with the materials and create their images. Take a look at the images below to see the fantastic variety in approach to this project!

As always on report card pickup, we held an art show in the studio. Visitors were treated to cookies, juice, and gorgeous student-made creations. Certain student work was available for pickup, while other work will go home at the end of the school year. In addition to the show, visiting parents were free to speak with me about their child's artistic and studio habits.
Features of the show included:
I want to send a big thank you and shout-out to the staff members that helped set up the show: Ms. Macklin, Ms. Friedl, Ms. Rojas, and Ms. Chavez - thank you for all your hard work the night before. If you missed the show, take a look at the pictures below of some of the fabulous work that was on display! Middle school students have been hard at work on their figure sculptures. Many students will even be ready to display their sculptures in the art show tomorrow! Currently, students are painting their figures and adding paper details such as hair and clothing. Students are practicing mixing colors, including different browns for skin tones. Students are also practicing painting tiny details on their faces and clothes. The sculptures are looking incredible. Come to the show tomorrow to see some of the finished products. Fifth through eighth grade students have been working on something new! Their current project involves making miniature sculptures of themselves. These classes have already completed the armature part of the sculpture.
How did they make these? Beginning with aluminium foil, students cut and shaped the foil into the form of a person. Then, students coated the form with layers of paper mache. Some students used colored paper to add a base coat of color during this process. You can see the process below. Stay tuned to see how they turn out! After completing their "Oh The Places You'll Go!" watercolor paintings, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade students began creating models of their ideal hot air balloon. Students are using party balloons as a base, and then adding layers of paper mache to create the hard shell of the balloon. Once the shell is completed, students have the option of gluing colored paper on top, or using paint to decorate their balloons. The final step will be painting paper cups for their baskets and attaching the baskets to their balloons with colorful pipe cleaners. Older students will be able to do this part by themselves while staff members may help the younger students with this step.
Students are nearly done with these balloons, so you can expect to see them on display during report card pickup! |
