First grade has some very beautiful artwork hanging on the third floor! After reading a short story full of "tion" and "tian" words, first grade practiced drawing people in profile. Then, they looked over a number of Egyptian paintings and identified commonalities in dress and style. Finally, they used reference images to draw their own painting inspired by Egyptian portraiture.

Congratulations to my 6th and 7th grade classes for earning 4 or more Bright Paws since we have returned from winter break! We celebrated with a painting party where each student was responsible for including lyrics from the Black National Anthem in their painting. I love the variety and vibrance in each individual's painting. Stop outside the art room door to see these beautiful paintings!
Anansi has returned to the art room to repeat some of our favorite spider story art projects. Below you can see second grade creating spider symmetry collages. The class learned about the country of Ghana and discussed the importance of folktales as important cultural keepsakes brought to America in the memories of African slaves.
First grade practiced using rulers and symmetry as they designed their own castles. Students discussed symmetry and asymmetry, and identified if buildings were symmetrical. Students then had the opportunity to design their own castles, and choose to make it symmetrical or asymmetrical. Take a peek below to see them painting their final designs!
As middle school continues to draw connections between music and visual art, we paused briefly to discuss the connections between lyrics, poetry and art. Students discussed the rhythmic and visual qualities of poetry, and constructed poems themselves using the blackout poem technique. Take a look at some of the examples below for some visually stunning poetry!
