This year, middle school students will be focusing on the idea of adaptations. We are starting with animal and plant adaptations for first and second quarter, and moving into the unique adaptations of people in third and fourth quarters. Currently, middle school students are planning their 4 project concentration about adaptation. An artist's concentration is when an artist creates multiple artworks exploring one topic. Students have selected some of he following topics for their concentrations: The desert, feathers, animal eyes, the tundra, weather, sunlight, and predators.

Second grade has begun their poetry unit this year. To start off, the class practiced reading Shel Silverstein's "Poet's Tree". Then, we moved onto some material exploration. Students used oil pastels to create their first Poet's tree, closely following an example tree I drew. These trees are posted on the bulletin board outside of the art room. Then, students practiced drawing different types of trees in their sketchbooks. Using these sketches, students designed their own poet's tree to draw and paint with watercolors. Students practiced layering the watercolor paint, and using a warm or cool color scheme. Check out the images below of both projects!
This year, third, fourth, and fifth grades will be creating art projects that explore different habitats around the planet. All year long, students will be selecting animals or places to create artwork about. Currently, we are creating "sketch notes" for each of the following habitats: Temperate forests, tropical rain forests, grasslands, deserts, arctic regions, and the ocean. Sketch notes are a form of note-taking that combines information gathering with drawing and design. Students participated in discussions, read information, and watched video clips about each of these habitats while they created their sketch notes. Below I have taken pictures of some very well designed notes!
