We're beginning this year's round of sculptures! This time, we are taking music, and creating an artistic statement about it. Students are designing sculptures to highlight why music is important. Students are considering music's relevance in cultural identity, storytelling, communication, entertainment, emotional influence, and in popular culture. After some very insightful discussions, students drew up their plans, and jumped into the building process. We're at the beginning stages, but check back close to June to see the final results!

Eighth grade has been working diligently on their canvases, and they are coming along! Each team has selected a different school theme to explore on their painting: History, Science, Physical Education, The Arts, and Civics. The teams have encountered many road blocks and many successes as they have tackled this difficult task. If you look at the photos below, you will notice areas of the paintings that have been painted, then re-painted as students debated and revised their original ideas.
I was blessed with an exclusive art class with our 3rd graders in room 207, and we used it to the fullest. We drew, painted, cut, and collaged an underwater scene using mixed media. Ms. Thurman and Ms. Hernandez are such wonderful staff to work with and they made sure we could finish this project within the one-hour time slot by monitoring and assisting students.
Pre-K continues to make art about animals with the fuzzy spring rabbit. They made bunny ears to take home, but I really loved some of their rabbit drawings. I find children's drawings to be so vibrant and joyful. Take a look and see if you feel the same way.
Second Grade has just completed their very first paper mache project. This is their introduction to all of the future sculptures they will be making over the years as they grow up in our Bright art program. From third grade on, they will be designing and building unique sculptures every year, so hopefully they got some good experience. It can be a challenging process to work with the liquid glue and brittle paper.
Second Grade will get to take their hot air balloons home this week, just in time to take them for a spin during spring break. Just kidding, please don't attempt to fly these sculptures, they are for decoration only. Be sure to hang them somewhere safe so they can be admired for years to come! |
