Below, I have linked some of the videos we practiced illustrating in class. Recently, classes have moved on to paint abstract interpretations of various musical styles from Latin America. Soon classes will use these experiences to create musical portraits of important musicians in American history.
Intermediate and middle school art classes have been experimenting with musical art. To practice, classes started by watching clips from the original fantasia to see how artists made visual choices to go along with each musical selection. Artists needed to choose specific colors, line styles, shapes, and movements to represent the instruments, melodies, and rhythms within the music.

And here is a music video featuring line that reacts to music.
Below is an example of a youtuber painting a song. If you are interested in more examples of musical art, YouTube is a great place to start!

Thank you so much to our donors on donorschoose.org! We were just delivered self-portrait mirrors to assist with our portrait drawings this year. Sixth grade got the honors of opening up the new mirrors, and spent a little time admiring themselves before getting into drawing. I hope these allow our students to bring new levels of personality into their portraits and increase their skills of observation.
Anyone wishing to donate to our future DonorsChoose projects can do so here: Ms. Mackus/Katz's DonorsChoose As always, we will be starting with our famous Rainbow Wall! This project has become a Bright School tradition, and we will be continuing it this year. Starting our second week, all classes will practice drawing portraits of themselves. When ready, students will draw and paint a self-portrait using a single color. Once every student in the school has completed their portrait, we hang them in rainbow order in the stairway throughout the school year. These portraits bring so much color to our halls each year. It is exciting to see how each student's style, skills, and choices change from year to year. I can't wait to see how they will turn out!
Welcome back parents and students to another exciting year at Bright elementary school. I am very excited to be back for my 7th year as Bright's Art specialist. My name is Ms. Katzenbach, or Ms. "Katz" for short. I am a teaching artist, with specialties in painting and video. I graduated from the University of Illinois with both a bachelors and a masters in Art Education. I am known around the school for big, funky jewelry and my remarkably loud speaking voice. In the spring, I hold an art show every year on report card pick-up day - be sure to check it out!
This first week art classes will review classroom routines and expectations with students before we begin our first project of the year. The art room is a very structured environment, and for good reason! We use many tools and make many messes. Structure and rules ensure that all students can participate in a safe, clean environment. If I ever have to contact home for a behavior issue, please understand that it if for the safety and well-being of your child and all of their classmates. If you ever have any concerns or questions about my class please contact me! |
