Below I have included a couple paintings from each of the following classes: 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th.
After reading about and discussing famous protests from U.S. and World history, middle school students selected one protest to re-create in a watercolor painting. Students were encouraged to select their own color scheme and combine elements from several reference photographs into their paintings. Finally, students were asked to sneak themselves into their paintings, as if they were a part of the historic day. Below I have included a couple paintings from each of the following classes: 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th.

Continuing with our unit exploring the book Oh, The Places You'll Go!, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade students have been creating watercolor paintings of their possible travels through life. Students were required to decide if they were painting a difficult or joyous "life terrain" that they were flying through in their painting. In this terrain, students were required to incorporate techniques to show perspective, and to include symbols of themselves on their balloons or hidden within their landscape.
Below I have included some images of 2nd grade as they complete their paintings. As each class completes this assignment, they will be moving on to create sculptures of their hot air balloon. It's incentive time again! Congratulations to 3rd and 7th grades on earning 4 or more ART PAWs in February! For this, those classes earned a special mask project this March. Students were able to create masks using scratch art, feathers, mod podge, sequins, and, of course, glitter.
Week in and week out our 8th grade students have been carrying paint and paintings up and down the staircase. What in the world are they doing? In fact, over the last few weeks, 8th grade has been working on a secret project: a wall mural. In the passageway leading to the library, 8th grade has been painting a mural to brighten up the school. Because the space is tiny, only a certain number of students can work in it at a time. To solve this problem, they have been bringing large canvases with them as well. During each art class, half of the 8th grade class works on the wall while the other half paints on the large canvases.
Each canvas is devoted to an important female figure and an inspirational quote. The wall mural is a large sunset with a tree growing in front, meant to signify that success is rooted in this location (a place of knowledge). When these paintings are done, they will remain in the school as a gift from the 8th grade class. Expect to see them on display in April during report card pickup! For those of you that are interested, the Bright school Media Club has a blog. They will be periodically posting articles about student concerns and ideas throughout the year. Visit it here:
