My primary grade classes have been reading Ashanti and Nigerian folktales to inspire our recent artwork. Second grade read the folktale "Anansi and the King's Drum", about a crafty spider named Anansi who tricks a lazy monkey. Afterwards, they created a collage of Anansi using bilateral and radial symmetry. Students practiced folding paper and cutting it to create a spider web demonstrating radial symmetry. Then, Students folded another paper in half to create Anansi using bilateral symmetry. Finally, students used paper scraps to add symmetrical designs to Anansi's body. If you stop by the school in January you can see the collages hanging outside of the art room!
